Why Shetland?
Shetland lies at the most northerly tip of the British Isles on the 60° North line of latitude where the North Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean and is perhaps “Britain's Best Kept Secret”? Shetland has some 900 miles of coastline, so where better to come to see the best of Britain's nature.
Do you want to see otters, seals, porpoises or even killer whales from your window? Do you want to get up close to puffins, gannets, guillemots, or the many other seabird colonies which thrive in Shetland? Or perhaps check out the moorland birds... the waders, the red-throated divers, the skuas or the 2 endemic species of wren? And don’t forget that almost all of Britain's red-necked phalaropes breed in Shetland!
How about visiting Scotland’s top tourist attraction according to the Rough Guide Organisation in 2006 – the “Mousa Broch” - or any of the other 5000 archaeological sites in Shetland?
And for the botantists... did you know that we have a flower in Shetland called the “Edmondstons Chickweed” and that this flower grows nowhere else in the world?
Or maybe you just want to experience something very magical and very unique... the peace and quiet, the dynamic landscape fashioned by geology, the dramatic sea-cliffs contrasting with tranquil voes and beautiful sandy beaches. And of course there is our world famous fiddle music, the annual Viking Fire Festival and many other festivals and exhibitions throughout the year celebrating Shetland's unique heritage and culture.
